How To Make a Cigar Box Purse
Maybe you would like to make your own purse with a design that is special to you. Below is a list of materials you will need to build your own purse. You will need to pick up items from a hardware store, a craft store and possibly a fabric store.
List of Materials
Cigar Box from your local smoke shop
sand paper
adhesive remover
clear gloss polyurethane
brass closure
brass corners
material for the lining
Trim for the lining
tassel
fusible batting for the lining
small mirror
pictures or images, fabric, fiber, embellishments, sequins, etc. for the back
handle and brass attachments or 20 gauge wire
Large holed beads for the handle
beads or upholstery tacks for 'feet'
Make sure you pick a wooden (may be paper covered or finished wood) box that is free of blemishes and is not warped. Remove the 'Surgeon General' stickers, if desired. Spray or cover the box with an initial layer of polyurethane. Decorate the back using glue and "seal" the finished design with a layer of slightly diluted glue. Attach all brass fixtures including the handle. You may need to cut some of the screws and/or nails that stick out in to the box. If you choose to use 20 gauge wire for your handle you will need to drill holes in the top of the box. Stick the excess wire through the holes and bend them flat. Glue a piece of heavy cardboard over the wire on the inside to secure. Cover with 2 more layers of polyurethane. Glue the mirror on the inside lid. Measure the inside and cut the batting and fabric to size. Iron the fusible batting to the material and glue the lining in to the box. Glue on the trim. Add your feel and tassel and enjoy!
